Trainer Kellyn Gorder tested Bourbon Courage in graded stakes after he posted dominant victories in each of his first two starts. The Lion Heart colt finished fourth in the 2012 Derby Trial Stakes (G3) in his third career start and later ran a close second to Macho Macho in the West Virginia Derby (G2). Bourbon Courage earned a breakthrough stakes win when winning the Super Derby (G2) by five lengths to stamp himself one to watch moving forward.
Bourbon Courage was purchased for $15,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale of selected yearlings.
