The 2011 Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner returned from a nearly nine-month layoff to win an allowance race at Del Mar in July before finishing second to stablemate Capital Account in the seven-furlong Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) on August 26. He than showed he was back to his best with a game victory in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1).
Bred by Glen Hill Farm, Coil won the 2011 Haskell with a stirring last-to-first move, edging that year’s Preakness Stakes (G1) hero Shackleford by a neck in what was his first start on a dirt track.
That win made the chestnut colt the third Grade 1 winner sired by champion Point Given. Following a 10th-place finish in the 2011 Travers Stakes (G1) and third-place finish behind older horses in the Goodwood Stakes (G1) that October, Coil was given a lengthy rest before returning to the races in summer 2012 .
Florida-bred Coil was purchased privately by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. His dam is the hard-knocking mare Eversmile, a half sister to 1995 champion turf female Possibly Perfect.
