Fiftyshadesofhay took some time to break her maiden but she did in a big way when winning her fourth race by 3 1/4 lengths. However, unlike when she was attempting to get her first win, the filly went right to the winner's circle in her graded stakes debut, winning the Santa Ysabel (G3) by 5 3/4 lengths. Fiftyshadesofhay was a constant on the California circuit during the winter, finishing second in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) and third in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) behind 2-year-old champion Beholder.
Fiftyshadesofhay was sold for $175,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
