Golden Soul showed that he relishes longer distances when he broke his maiden by 7 1/4 lengths over a distance of 1 1/16 miles at the Fair Grounds in December 2012. The colt then stepped up to stakes company where he finished second in the LeComte Stakes (G3) for his first step on the Derby Trail. Golden Soul finished sixth and fourth respectively in his next two races, both Kentucky Derby points races. Golden Soul proved that he belonged in the race when he finished second behind Orb in the Kentucky Derby.
