One start into her racing career, In Lingerie already had suitors clamoring after her. Having been purchased privately by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber after winning her first career start by 6 ¼ lengths at Turfway Park, the daughter of Empire Maker justified that leap of faith by taking the Bourbonette Oaks (G3) and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) in 2012 while also finishing in the top three in both the Alabama Stakes (G1) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).
The physical ability and mettle that first impressed Eclipse Thoroughbreds principal Aron Wellman was most obviously displayed when In Lingerie won the Black-Eyed Susan by 1 ¼ lengths despite grabbing her right front foot leaving the starting gate – an injury that resulted in her bleeding while heading to the winner’s circle. A granddaughter of 1993 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Phone Chatter, In Lingerie has had some maturity issues, something that prompted her connections to bypass the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
“We decided to take a little more cautious approach,” trainer Todd Pletcher said.
