Bred: Mort Fink (KY)
Sire: Successful Appeal
Dam: Lisa Danielle, by Wolf Power
Lightly raced multiple graded stakes winner Successful Dan has flashed brilliance on the track in three racing seasons, including setting a track record at Churchill Downs during the 2012 Spring meet. That makes the 6-year-old gelded Morton Fink homebred one of the top handicap horses in training along with his half brother and stablemate Wise Dan.
The Successful Appeal gelding out of the Wolf Power mare Lisa Danielle is one year older than fellow multiple graded stakes winner Wise Dan. But he has had his career compromised by recurring suspensory ligament problems in his left leg, although the injuries haven’t affected his disposition or his competitive nature.
“He’s very agreeable and he’s one of the best horses I’ve ridden,” jockey Julien Leparoux said after Successful Dan set the track record in the 2012 Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
Since his track record in the Alysheba Stakes, Successful Dan has earned a second place finish in the Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap and a win in the Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes.
Through his dam, Successful Dan is a great-grandson of 1973 Triple Crown winner and two-time Horse of the Year Secretariat. Lisa Danielle also was owned and campaigned by Fink and Successful Appeal was one of the country’s best sprinters in 1999-2000.
