The son of A.P. Indy out of the multiple Grade 1-winning racemare Take Charge Lady did not reach his reserve price at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale and was acquired in a private sale by Secure Investments. Chuck and Maribeth Sandford purchased a half interest in the colt and subsequently became the sole owners.
Turned over to veteran trainer Patrick Byrne, the large colt easily won his debut at Arlington Park on July 30. He had the lead in the stretch of the Arlington-Washington Futurity on September 10, but finished second. After a fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in October, he was fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Take Charge Indy was second to eventual Risen Star winner El Padrino in an allowance optional claiming race on January 29 at Gulfstream Park before punching his ticket to the Kentcuky Derby with a dominant victory in the Florida Derby.
Take Charge Indy emerged from a 19th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby with a bone chip in an ankle and underwent successful surgery to remove the chip.
