Protective ran second in his career debut in July 2023 at Saratoga Race Course for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Repole Stable. The dark bay or brown Medaglia d’Oro colt out of Grade 1 winner Grace Hall, by Empire Maker, was a $250,000 purchase out of the 2022 Keeneland September yearling sale.
He returned from a long layoff March 10, 2024, at Tampa Bay Downs and finished third in a one-mile and 40-yard maiden special weight race but was disqualified and place fourth for interference.
